Google page one. What you can and can’t pay for.

March 22, 2011 By Melinda

When you type a search term, or keyword, into Google, the page where the results are listed is called the Search Engine Results Page (SERP).

The SERP includes both organic listings of websites that are relevant to the search term, and Sponsored Links, which are advertisements paid for through the Google AdWords program.

Organic listings show the websites that Google matches to being most relevant to the search term. Although you can’t pay for your website to appear in the organic listings there are many agencies you can pay to optimise your website for search engines (SEO), which helps your website appear higher up on the SERP.

SEO techniques will be covered in a future edition of Click Tips. Having a keyword rich Title Tag, as explained last Click Tips, is an important SEO technique.

Paying to appear in the Sponsored Links by advertising in the Google AdWords program can get your website to Google’s page one straight away.  Set up an account at adwords.google.com or save time and get better results by working with a Google Certified Advertising Professional to set up and optimise your account. Check out our AdWords Trial that includes $100 of free advertising with Google.

Through the AdWords program you only pay when someone clicks on your ad.  Costs are controlled as you set the maximum budget that you are prepared to pay each day.  Evaluating your return on investment is easy to track via how many clicks (visitors) are generated by the ad.  You can also go a step further and track which people take a specified action, such as signing up for your newsletter or contacting you via email.

Aim to use a mix of activities, including paid and organic search, to increase traffic to your new website. Once you get your website to page one of Google, keep the activities going to keep your place!

Click Tip Summary

The aim of every website owner is for their website to be listed on page one of Google, giving their website wider exposure and more traffic.  Google’s Search Engine Results Page (SERP) includes both organic listings and Sponsored Links. Organic listings are achieved through content relevance and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) while Sponsored Links are advertisements paid for through the Google AdWords program.
