Creating and distributing a quality newsletter can position you as a voice of authority in your chosen field, which can ultimately lead to increased sales for your business.
Once you’ve decided to add a newsletter to your marketing mix, you need to build a subscriber list, decide how often you’ll send it, and more importantly, what content to include.
To help get your newsletter ideas flowing, here are my key takeaways from a webinar on “Top Tips for Newsletters that Produce Results” presented by Belinda Weaver of Copywrite Matters and Suzi Dafnis of the Australian Business Women’s Network.
How often should you send your Newsletter?
Pick a timeframe and be consistent.
Decide how often you can share valuable content. You can email your subscribers more frequently (for example every day!) as long as the content is valuable.
Getting your newsletter opened
A carefully crafted subject line is important for getting your newsletter opened.
- Incorporate the word “newsletter” into your subject line – this lets people see that it’s something they have chosen to subscribe to
- Use the sender name as “Person from Company”.
Tips for your newsletter content
- Have an introduction or welcome area at the start. Give a synopsis of what you’ll cover.
- Add a P.S. to the intro – add something you want to draw particular attention to
- Share industry news, this positions you as the subject matter expert
- Share tips and hints
- Vary the content with short tips and long bits of content with links to more information
- Interview industry experts
- Profile people for example members of your community, or customers – everyone loves seeing themselves in a newsletter! And they’ll probably share it with their network.
- Book reviews or any industry content eg webinars, podcasts, eBooks etc
- Upcoming events
- Sharing resources – you don’t have to produce the resources yourself, share any resource that will be valuable to your subscribers
- Provide offers and incentives that are exclusively available to subscribers
- Company news eg industry awards, new product launches, new team members – be a cheerleader for your business!
- Aim to use 80% content that’s helpful and 20% that’s promotional
More ideas for newsletter content:
- Recent media coverage
- Answer questions from customers
- Put a spotlight on a product or service
- Share testimonials, quotes and case studies
- Link to blog posts or other new content
Belinda’s Tips for Super News
- Be consistent
- Offer value
- Use images to break up text
- Have an unsubscribe link
- Don’t subscribe people without their permission
- Share and promote your newsletter via social media, your website etc
